Avoiding Spring Allergies

spring allergies

Enjoying the spring weather in Wilmington, Delaware, is difficult if you have to endure the constant coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, and congestion caused by allergies. Pollen comes from spring flowers, and high humidity causes mold growth. These allergens easily get into your home through doors, windows, and your HVAC system. You can avoid spring allergies and improve your indoor air quality by cleaning regularly, using an air purifier, and maintaining your heating and air conditioning system.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning will keep dust, dirt, pollen, mold, and other contaminants from accumulating in your home. Use a damp cloth to wipe off HVAC air registers, return vents, and ceiling fans. Clean your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans by turning off the power, removing the covers, and washing them with soapy water. To save energy as well as keep allergens out, remove any leaves, grass clippings, pollen, or other debris from the surface of your outdoor air conditioning unit.

Using an Air Purifier for Allergies

Air purifiers or air cleaners use air filters to capture allergens. Air purifiers with high Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or MERV ratings can even filter some bacteria and viruses out of your indoor air. You can have a whole-home unit connected to your HVAC system by a professional or use a less expensive portable unit to improve the indoor air quality in one room or area. Take advantage of our Filter Easy program to have fresh, clean filters delivered to your home automatically

Maintaining Your HVAC System

An air conditioner can keep your indoor air cool, clean, and dry as long as you maintain it to prevent problems. Have your HVAC system inspected by a professional at least once per year and check the filters in your air purifier and air conditioner once per month. For maximum efficiency, replace the filters when they get dirty or at least every three months.

Energize Delaware Success Story

The middle of the winter is the absolute wrong time for your heater to give up the ghost.

Amber and Sean S. were in just this fix. Their furnace broke down earlier this winter. Dave Gorman, one of our senior techs came right over and diagnosed the problem – a bad furnace control board.

Although he was able to make a temporary repair so that they had heat for the night, they were looking at a significant repair bill.

Before making the repair though, they spoke with Jim Hess – one of our sales consultants – who walked them through the benefits of the Energize Delaware program

The result – rather than patch together an old heater – they were able to invest in both a new high efficiency furnace and air conditioner. And they received a check for $2,000 from the Energize Delaware program to help.

What Do Those HVAC Ratings Mean?

HVAC ratings

If you’ve been shopping for a new HVAC system, you keep hearing all sorts of acronyms like “EER,” “SEER,” “AFUE,” or “HSPF” . If you don’t know what they mean, you should – all of these acronyms are rating systems that are used to score HVAC units on their efficiency.

These ratings can be very important to you. In addition to the fact that the higher the efficiency, the lower your utility bills, higher efficiency equipment may qualify for significant money back under the Energize Delaware program.

Protect Your Finished Room From Disaster

In our experience, water heaters seem to last from 8 to 12 years. A water heater leak, no matter how small it is, can cost a lot of money, even if you’re home when the leak occurs. You may have spent thousands of dollars finishing your basement, and the contractors boxed your water heater in – out of sight out of mind until it springs a leak. To protect against unexpected catastrophes, installing an automatic shut off valve is the easiest and most affordable approach.
